Stratus Media Solutions (publisher of Drift Snowkite Magazine)
Background
Snowkiting (using a kite to pull a person on snow using the wind) is a niche sport within the larger but also niche sport of “Kiteboarding” that includes kiting on water, snow or dirt. “Google it” and have your mind blown by the variety of ways you can use a kite.
I was the founder, editor, designer and one of many contributing writers and photographers.
My publisher and partner in crime, Dave Grossman, was the backbone of the business operations. He was also instrumental in all aspects of the creation of the magazine. I don’t know if he realized how much work there was going to be when I asked him to take on the role of publisher. I will say that he stepped up to the task and went beyond the call of duty to make the magazine a success.
Challenge
The challenge was to reach enthusiasts and potential new participants around the world. Accomplishing this with a traditional printed magazine would be a financial and logistical challenge – if not an impossibility. Making this venture profitable meant finding another way.
Solution
We designed the logo and magazine from the ground up so that it would be mainly accessible online – with the option for readers to order using print-on-demand technology if they chose to do that.
When we started the magazine we thought we knew pretty much all of the main countries, riding locations, athletes and manufacturers. But as we started gathering content and contacts, our eyes were opened to even more groups of people and brands around the world. And even then, we were surprised and absolutely delighted when the first issue was viewed and very well received in over 100 different countries around the world! Pretty amazing for a sport that very few people in the world even knew existed. It’s a big world, but technology can make it small.
